The Best Coats for Fall 2023

From fresh off the runway to all-time classics, here are our best coats and jackets for fall.

By Bea Isaacson

The days are getting ever so slightly shorter and despite the enduring September sunshine, there’s a cool breeze in the air. Summer tans fade as the Out of Offices declines in number. Time to bring out your best coats once more; with August over in the blink of an eye, it’s fall once again.

Even the most committed of summer lovers will find joy with the dawn of the new season. There’s great beauty in the colors of the fall, a romance in the falling of the leaves and their crunching underfoot. And, to fashionistas across the world, it ushers in the new fashion season, with New York Fashion Week kicking things off on September 7 2023.

Naturally, one doesn’t need to be in New York – or, subsequently, London, Paris and Milan – to enjoy the most fashionable of seasons, nor to be dogmatically tuned in to the day’s trends to make the most of the months where for many of us, the days can be warm, the nights get chilly, and it is just as likely to be great sunshine as it is to rain all day.

Just before we enter the coldest months of the year, take advantage of the flexibility fall grants with layers that can transition across the temperatures, the weather, and – of course – the week’s work and social calendar. The brilliance, really, lies within the right outer layer. From fresh off the runway to all-time classics, here are our best coats for the fall.

Burberry Kennington Trench Coat

It is one thing for a piece of clothing to come to represent a brand; it is a whole other, for it to define a country. The Burberry trench coat, the long-reigning epitome of British luxury fashion, is the wardrobe staple that has outfitted women on both sides of the Atlantic for decades.

Whilst the beige tones and longline silhouette is a real comfort staple of the fall and spring seasons, it’s the recently updated version of the classic that we’re particularly excited by this season. The Kennington trench coat, with its oversized shape, press-stud cuffs and double-breast closure, feels like an urban update on the old classic, while the detachable faux-fur collar adds an element of old-world, Art Deco chic.

Miu Miu Double-Breasted Nappa Leather Jacket

One could make the argument that the post-pandemic 2020s have been the years of Miu Miu. From bringing back the ultra-low rise, ultra-mini mini skirt to leading the ballet pump revival – not to mention its meticulous portfolio of it-girl fans – Miu Miu is the unofficial uniform of the 2023 cool girl.

Less controversial than the embroidered silk and wool panties that featured throughout its recent AW23 line – and considerably warmer, too – is the double-breasted nappa leather jacket, straight off the runway. Boxy and deliberately tailored to look lived-in, this piece in the amaranth red shade is a thrilling update on the boyfriend jacket look. Not only is it perfect for the day-to-night transition, but its layering capabilities render it a bonafide staple from the warmth of September to the winter’s edge come Thanksgiving weekend.

Tove Karen Long Wool Coat

Available now to pre-order is the utterly, somewhat impossibly elegant Karen long wool coat, courtesy of London-based brand Tove. This off-white offering has all the characteristics of the classic wool coat (single-breasted front; a tailored silhouette that goes in subtly at the waist; a button-front closure) but it’s the neckline that renders Tove’s update particularly exciting.

Wrapped around the collar and slightly draped, the high neckline has long been hallmarks of class and sophistication. For a statement coat that turns heads without once looking like one is seeking attention, the Karen long wool coat is one of the best on the market this fall.

Perhaps more Bella Hadid than Jill Biden in aesthetic – but no lesser in quality – is this army jacket offering from Ralph Lauren. Long pioneers of the New England WASP scene, recent years have seen the All-American luxury brand branch out into the urban scene to great success.

Perfect for lazy weekends, the stowaway hood is a perfect – and wonderfully discreet – addition for the unpredictable fall weather. The subtle embroidery and branded patches add an element of in-vogue bohemia, while the hip-hitting hemline is excellent for layering.

Loewe Tailored Coat in Wool and Cashmere

The oldest luxury fashion house of LVMH, Loewe is something of a cut above – if you pardon the pun – even the most established of fashion brands. Prioritizing the best of quality and tightly maintaining its long history of exclusivity, the house is now enjoying its time in the sun; quiet luxury is in, and few other brands stand for the aesthetic more than Loewe.

Join in with the fun with a timeless piece from a timeless brand with the Loewe tailored coat in wool and cashmere. Long and slim, this is indisputably one of the all-time classics of the best coats for fall; its camel tone is perfectly chic for the season’s palette, whilst the concealed back vents and partially concealed fastening lend an air of effortlessness to a coat that works as well for the office as it does for evening elegant attire.

The Row Hellen Coat

The Row Hellen Coat

Back to the trench coat for another glorious update on the fall coat classic. Akin to Loewe, The Row has come to stand as a hallmark of the quiet luxury genre, discreetly advertising itself as the outfitter of the world’s elite through its commitment to never actually ever advertising. Unlike Loewe, The Row is remarkably young to have cultivated such industry acclaim; many will know Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are at the helm of this brand.

Accepting awards year after year from the CFDA, the world’s most stylish twins have deconstructed this taupe-toned trench coat in a manner that is utterly unique and totally show-stopping. Falling to the ankle, this is the entire outfit; a simple pair of black kitten heels will suffice underneath. There’s a Parisian feel to the drastic femininity of the draped front scarf panel, and giddy delight in how it falls at the back, but make no mistake: This is American high fashion, a piece that feels at once both exciting novelty and yet enduringly timeless.
