This English Country House is Timeless Rural Beauty

Property of the Week: Fairytale beauty and historic charm unites within this English country house.

By Bea Isaacson

For those that have had the pleasure to experience it, there is nothing like the English countryside. Away from the urban pace and metallic bustle of the country’s heaving industrialized city centers, the countryside of England feels totally enchanting – and somewhat ethereal – in its surprisingly touching beauty.

There’s a lyricism to the rolling hills and a magic to the patchwork assemble of its colors. The buzz of dragonflies rise a note higher than the lapping of the rivers, in which the waters turn green at a certain angle of the sun. Come sun or – quite likely – lashings of rain, property in the English countryside is just as sought after as it’s been for centuries now, both a brilliant spot within nature to vacation and an undeniable status symbol throughout the world.

On the market for those seeking the most authentic of English country house experiences is Manston House, the eight-bedroom manor first built in the 17th century and today of the Grade II listing.

“Manston House is the epitome of Georgian elegance, nestled in the heart of North Dorset,” says Lindsay Cuthill, founder of Blue Book Agency, who overlooks the property. “Manston House is a sanctuary for those who appreciate the perfect fusion of heritage and luxury.”

Sprawling across 52 acres of gorgeous grounds, the manor is surrounded by landscaped gardens and mature trees for a personal slice of the idyllic English terrain throughout the dramatically changing seasons. Owners can enjoy vistas beyond the grounds that include the nearby River Stour, local farmland and the local hamlet of Manston, from which the manor derives its name.

And Manston House itself has been the benefactor of a recent renovation that has seen the English country house restored to its former beauty, with original features still intact and functioning.

The large hallway upon first impression is handsome and light, with a homely elegance that permeates throughout the house. Original features such as the fireplaces bring continuity of the centuries, whereas modern touches of English country house aesthetic, such as the wooden floors and the muted color palette, are suitably stylish for both a family home and a hosting space.

The drawing room, large dining room, library and family room of the ground floor provide owners with ample living spaces; the galleried landing upon the first floor feels utterly romantic.

Each bedroom on the first floor features its own ensuite, and the master bedroom comes with its own drawing room, too. Other bedrooms can be found on the second floor, in which two bathrooms and a music room are also located.

The grounds, which have been brilliantly landscaped to include the best of English flora and fauna, also include a tennis court, a garage, and – as if this English country house could get more Austenian – its own parish church and mausoleum attached to the ownership of the house and grounds.
