El Cielo Martini by Patrón

Cocktail of the Week: Patrón El Cielo is the first four-times distilled luxury tequila.

By Samantha Coles

Usually, when shaking (or stirring) up a martini, you’re only considering two base spirits. Gin, as the purists will say is the component of the original martini, or vodka. This recipe from Patrón uses the tequila brand’s newest release, El Cielo, bringing a new dimension to the old classic.

Despite being one of the world’s best-known tequila brands, Patrón is still exclusively produced in the highlands of Jalisco, Mexico. The tequila is created in small batches with the same careful craftsmanship — just as it was when the brand was founded in 1989 by John Paul DeJoria and Martin Crowley.

The 100% Weber Blue Agave is harvested by hand at the peak of ripeness and cooked in small batches to extract the agave’s natural sugars. The tequila is distilled using traditional copper pot stills which helps to preserve the agave flavors. Each bottle is also handcrafted from recycled glass and is individually labeled and numbered.

The new expression, El Cielo, is the first four-times distilled luxury tequila. Following 150 tasting sessions, curious experiments and countless hours of research, the resulting liquid delivers the natural sweet flavors of the agave with bright citrus notes. El Cielo is the newest member of the Patrón Silver collection, which is unaged, offering a crisp and smooth flavor.

You might also find that you’re making space in your home bar due to the bottle’s sleek design. The glass bottle’s stopper is a gilded reimagining of the mottled surface of the volcanic tohana stone that is used to produce Patrón; other golden details are inspired by the agave fields.
