The Hari Review: A Stylish Getaway in Belgravia, London

The Hari feels like a living room, and the super friendly staff add to the welcoming atmosphere.

By Samantha Coles

Find The Hari hotel in the swish London neighborhood of Belgravia. The hotel’s facade is adorned with lush foliage and can be easily identified by the oversized, canary yellow bench outfront (you’ll probably recognize it as Instagram fodder for many an influencer), as well as the dog fashioned from a shrub. Harrods is a 10-minute walk away; Hyde Park just eight minutes and all Sloane Square is a brisk walk down the road. Despite being in such a popular spot, The Hari feels secluded.

Inside, the boutique hotel has a decidedly relaxed vibe. It feels like you’re entering a living room, and the super friendly staff add to the welcoming atmosphere. They’ll offer you a glass of wine while you check in (which is how all check-ins should be.)

Stay

The signature suite is sleek and sexy with a vampish color palette of deep purples, glossy blacks and dark reds. A statement cow-print rug is a fun focal point, and the walls are adorned with chic photography by Mario Testino. There’s a small but perfectly formed desk area that overlooks the rooftops of the iconic white townhouses that surround the hotel. Neat and smart storage solutions stop it feeling cluttered, and there’s a curtain that can be drawn around the desk so as to ‘block’ the rest of the suite out. But, if you’re not in town for business, there’s a chill bottle of moet awaiting on arrival along with some moreish chocolate-chip cookies, tied up in a Hari monogrammed ribbon. The ensuite bathroom is the star of the show, though — with a bathtub next to a huge window that overlooks the neighborhood below.

Drink

In times of Covid-19 restrictions, hotels have to come up with creative ways to ensure guests’ happiness when the 10pm curfew looms. The Hari’s solution? An ever-so-charming cocktail cart. Simply call reception from your suite, and up comes the wooden cocktail cart, manned by an expert mixologist. Your cocktail will be assembled at your suite’s door, straight from the cart. Go for The Haritini – it’s the signature cocktail and pays homage to the hotel’s founder, Aron Harilela.

Dine

Il Pampero serves hearty Italian cuisine (with notable influences from Southern Italy) in a charming and stylish setting. For an aperitif, order one of the signature cocktails  — the recipes are inspired by the artwork that can be seen hanging on the restaurant’s walls. Dine on the cult classic, Caico e Pepe (handmade tagliolini with creamy pecorino cheese and pepper). The Garden Terrace is a little slice of heaven in the city: a sun-drenched spot in the summer and a cozy hideaway in winter thanks to the retractable roof. The vertical garden and twinkling lights give it a cool Secret Garden vibe, and it’s easy to spend a lazy afternoon here.

Art

The decor at The Hari is exceptional. From fully-stacked libraries in the bar area to select modern art by Tracy Emin adorning the walls, the beauty is in all the little details. Some of the art works are available to purchase, and Charlie Smedley, managing director of A Space for Art, regularly changes the on-site collection. The library is also not just for show as guests are encouraged to borrow and donate books. In response to the lockdown measures of Covid-19, The Hari also has a wonderful artwork initiative to celebrate the graduating class of 2020 who were unable to present at degree shows due to lockdown. Partnering with London’s art schools, emerging artists were elected by their classmates and colleagues to present their work in the hotel.
