Ahead of its upcoming summer re-opening, the Splendido, A Belmond Hotel, Portofino has revealed a tantalizing glimpse at the first completed stages of its multi-year renovation. Carried out by the revered Martin Brudnizki Design Studio, this first phase includes a revitalized swimming pool and restaurant, as well as a fresh spin on the grand Baronessa Suite.
Perched high on the hill overlooking Portofino Bay below, Splendido has long been an icon of the Italian Riviera, with this latest renovation looking to build upon the hotel’s celebrated character. The 1970s pool and its surrounding terrace area, in particular, are particular highlights for the hotel’s returning guests.
The space has been reimagined by respected Italian landscape designer Marco Bay, who has maintained the pool’s legendary reputation while simultaneously modernizing by reflecting the green-blue colors of the ocean below, and adding contrasting hues of pink, red and white stone embedded with mosaic sea creatures to the surrounding terrace.

Adjoining the pool is the Splendido Grill restaurant, which Brudnizki and team have revitalized with a display of hand-painted white and green tiles, Murano glass pendant lights, and a terracotta-colored flecked floor. A retractable sunroof in complementary hues is on hand to protect diners from the glaring European sun.
The final element of Splendido’s first renovation phase is the re-design of the glamorous Baronessa Suite, one of the hotel’s six Specialty Suites. The roomy suite comprises a king bed, private terrace and separate living space, and, with its lovingly restored antique furnishings from local auctions houses, Graniglia alla Genovese flooring and a carved timber headboard, pays homage to the region’s famous palazzos.

“Splendido is an icon and so our approach to the project was similar to that of a portrait painter, creating a design centered on the building and one that is as much a restoration as a rejuvenation,” says Martin Brudnizki. “It was important the design situates guests in Portofino, creating that comforting feeling of being at a friend’s holiday home while allowing them to experience the beauty, art and life of this magical place.”
“Splendido’s multi-phase renovation is undoubtedly an extraordinary project that brings this historical hotel into the future, keeping the spirit that made it the legend that it is, completely intact,” adds Alberto Pirozzini, managing director of Splendido. “Considering the novelties that await our guests, a stay at the Splendido will continue to be not only a memorable experience, but an unforgettable journey both exclusive and unique.”
