Watchmakers have been enamored with creating Métiers d’Art watch dials for centuries. Early clocks and pocket watches often showcased jewels and miniature paintings. Now, however, artisans take this work to all-new levels as brands work with marquetry, gold, gemstones and all sorts of paintings to bring nature seemingly to life, as they become more conscious than ever of Earth’s many riches.

Van Cleef & Arpels
The newest Poetic Complication Lady Arpels Heures Florales watch combines innovative mechanics with striking artistic savoir faire. Thanks to a special retrograde mechanism, each time another hour passes, a corresponding number of flowers open up to reveal a gem-set center. This 18-karat white gold version boasts a miniature painting on three-dimensional sculpted flowers. The various corollas of 12 of the flowers open every 60 minutes for a new take on time. Exactly 166 elements are set into motion thanks to an intricate assembly that connects the watch mechanism to the petals — ensuring one of three different sequences of flower openings.
