Karl Lagerfeld Macau to Welcome First Guests in June

The new hotel is every bit as extravagant as you would expect.

By Irenie Forshaw

Karl Lagerfeld has hit the headlines countless times already this week as the stars gathered in New York City to pay tribute to the designer at the 2023 Met Gala. But that’s not all – the first images have also emerged of the only hotel ever conceived by the late fashion powerhouse – The Karl Lagerfeld Macau – set to welcome its first guests on China’s southern coast this June.

Situated at the Grand Lisboa Palace Resort in Macau, the opulent 271-room hotel is every bit as extravagant as you would expect. The former Chanel creative director spent several years before his death working closely with SJM Resorts on the design – and it shows.

Every last detail has been stamped with Lagerfeld’s signature flair from the large-scale installations and décor to the sumptuous bathrobes and bedsheets.

Elements from both classic Chinese design and contemporary Western aesthetics have been brought together seamlessly; think custom-made headboards inspired by coins that represent good fortune, porcelain vases handmade in Jingdezhen, and circular room dividers based on traditional Chinese moon gates.

The hotel interiors have been adorned with beautiful bespoke furnishings and pieces of art including glittering Terzani chandeliers and sculptures by artists Marcel Wanders and Jean-Michel Othoniel.

When it comes to dining, guests are in for a real treat at the Karl Lagerfeld Macau. The Mesa Restaurant will serve culinary delights from celebrated Portuguese chef Jose Avillez. The opulent hotel will also boast an expansive spa and wellness center designed by Lagerfeld, as well as a breathtaking Book Lounge featuring 4,000 hand-picked books.
