Opened on New Year’s Eve in 2006, Death & Co has transformed into one of the world’s most influential cocktail bars. Its focus has always been on giving classic cocktails a modern twist, reinforcing the trend of craft cocktails. Death & Co’s ambience is another unique draw: The dark space exudes a somewhat gothic vibe, with antique chandeliers, unfinished walls and no windows. Owners David Kaplan and Ravi DeRossi helped revive cocktail culture in New York, bringing it to the masses. Since then, they’ve opened Death & Co bars in Los Angeles and Denver, as well as released a cocktail book and merchandise. They even have their hand in several store concepts, including Watches of Switzerland’s New York flagship location in SoHo. The award-winning bar has an impressive wine and beer menu, as well as cocktails split up into categories dubbed, Fresh & Lively, Elegant & Timeless, Boozy & Honest, Light & Playful and Bright & Confident with unexpected, delicious combinations (like carrot eau de vie). There are small bites, like oysters and caviar, plus a comprehensive spirits menu in every price point and from almost every notable spirits-producing country. If there is one bar to visit in New York, it’s this one.
