A very dynamic system with a strong cold front will move through Central Alabama during the latter part of Friday and into the early morning hours on Saturday that will bring us a wide gamut of weather conditions... from strong to severe storms to sleet and snow. Here are my latest thoughts on what I see happening.
NWS to Stop Using “Advisory” in Its Hazard Messaging by 2024
Eli Jacks, the Chief of the NWS Forecast Services Division, released a statement this morning that there will be a major change to the NWS Hazard Messaging Headlines by discontinuing "Advisory" due to the confusion that the term causes, especially compared to a watch or warning.
Midday Update on the Upcoming Freezing Rain Event for Central Alabama
There is high confidence that freezing rain will occur over the Winter Storm Warning locations, but sleet could mix into the action for the extreme northwestern parts of the area. The uncertain part of the forecast is exactly how far eastward will the freezing temperatures at the surface reach.
Winter Weather Advisory Issued for Portions of Central Alabama Until 8:00 am Saturday
Periods of freezing rain are expected to affect parts of northwest Central Alabama through early Saturday morning.
No Icing Issues for Now, Small Potential for Northwestern Portions of North/Central Alabama Later Tonight
Radar check as of 8:30 pm shows very little activity across North/Central Alabama as nearly everyone is dry at this point of the evening with some showers falling over the extreme southeastern parts of Central Alabama.
Cloudy with a Few Showers Out There at Midday
Skies are mainly cloudy across Central Alabama, but there are a few breaks over the southeastern and extreme eastern parts of the area that is allowing a few rays of sunshine through.
