Heat Advisory for Much of Central Alabama Starting This Afternoon

Get ready for the heat today as heat index values may top out in the 101-106 degree range in the Heat Advisory area. If working or doing any other activities outdoors, please take the extra steps necessary to stay cool. There will not be much rain out there to help cool things off as we are only expecting a slight chance of an isolated shower or thunderstorm across much of the area, with slightly higher chances south of I-85 and US-80 in the southern parts of the area. Afternoon highs will be in the lower to mid-90s across the area. Here is the text from NWS Birmingham on the Heat Advisory:

BMX issues Heat Advisory valid at Jul 10, 1:00 PM CDT for Autauga, Barbour, Bibb, Bullock, Dallas, Elmore, Fayette, Greene, Hale, Lamar, Lee, Lowndes, Macon, Marengo, Marion, Montgomery, Perry, Pickens, Pike, Russell, Sumter, Tuscaloosa, Walker, Winston [AL] till Jul 10, 7:00 PM CDT.

HEAT ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 1 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO 7 PM CDT THIS EVENING

* WHAT…Heat index values 101 to 106 possible this afternoon.

* WHERE…Portions of Central Alabama generally west of Interstate 65 and along and south of Interstate 85.

* WHEN…From 1 PM this afternoon to 7 PM CDT this evening.

* IMPACTS…Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heatstroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1.
