As of 12:50 pm, all of the rain associated with the cold front has now pushed completely out of the area and we are left with cloudy skies and very cool temperatures. We are seeing readings in the mid-30s to the upper 40s at this point with Auburn leading the way at 48 degrees as the warm spot. Haleyville was the cold spot at 35 degrees. Birmingham was at 40 degrees as of the 12:00 pm roundup.
Skies will continue to stay mostly cloudy throughout the rest of the daylight hours across Central Alabama as temperatures will stay around the same for the next hour or so before starting to really fall. For tonight, most locations will drop below the freezing mark even with the mostly cloudy skies. Lows will be in the upper 20s to the lower 30s.
We’ll start off the day on Wednesday with some clouds over parts of Central Alabama, but all of those will work out of the area and we’ll be left with maximum sunshine by mid-afternoon. Temperatures will rebound slightly but remaining cool, reaching the upper 40s to the lower 50s for afternoon highs.
So far, NWS Birmingham has confirmed at least three tornado touchdowns during the severe weather event late last night. An EF-2 struck the Salt Well community in Marengo County with estimated peak winds of 120 MPH. An EF-1 tornado only causing tree damage in the Brierfield community of Bibb County with estimated peak winds of 90 MPH. An EF-0 with peak winds of 80 MPH touched down along AL-25 just east of Montevallo in Shelby County. All of these are preliminary and I will have a post out later when NWS releases full details for each tornado.
