CONDITIONS JUST BEFORE THE MIDDAY HOUR
Only a few fair-weather cumulus clouds dot the skies over Central Alabama, while there is plenty of sun baking the dry ground across the area. Temperatures are ranging from 88 degrees in Gadsden to 98 degrees in Uniontown. Birmingham was at 93 degrees.
JUST ONE MORE DAY OF EXTREME HEAT BEFORE THE WEDGE KICKS IN
A cold front with an associated wedge will begin to move into the eastern half of the area during the afternoon hours, but we will not see any heat relief until Thursday. Afternoon highs will still reach the mid-90s to just over 100 degrees across the area. There may be just enough moisture and convective lift to fire off a few isolated showers this afternoon to the east of the front over the extreme eastern parts of Central Alabama, but chances are only around 20%. A shower or two may linger over the southeastern corner of the area during the evening, but those should diminish rather quickly. Lows will be in the upper 60s to the lower 70s.
BACKDOOR WEDGE BRINGS COOLER TEMPERATURES TO CENTRAL ALABAMA
The backdoor wedge that everyone has been talking about will have move through much of the area bringing with it a cold front that will be moving in the opposite direction than normal. The front will move westward and end up around the AL/MS border during the morning hours. Skies will be mostly sunny but temperatures will be around 10-15 degrees cooler with highs reaching the mid-80s to right around 90 degrees. There may be just enough convection close to the cold front that a few isolated afternoon showers and thunderstorms could pop up over the southwestern parts of the area. If you want a preview of fall temperatures for overnight lows, we’ll drop down into the upper 50s to the upper 60s from east to west.
At this point, we still do not have any big chance for rain around here for the next seven days as much of Central Alabama is expected to stay dry during the forecast period. You may be able to squeeze out around 1/4-inch worth of rain if you are at Gulf Shores or Orange Beach, but that is if any afternoon showers develop.
