As of 4:25 pm, we have strong thunderstorms dumping heavy amounts of rain over portions of North/Central Alabama, especially west of the I-65 corridor. Flood Advisories are in effect for parts of Jefferson, Fayette, Lamar, and Pickens counties due to storms that are dropping heavy rain at rates around 2.00-4.00 inches per hour. The one for Jefferson County is just a few miles to the north of the areas affected by the big thunderstorm that dumped over 4.00 inches of rain in a 60-90 minute period.
Strong storms are also affecting portions of Franklin and Colbert counties. Very heavy rain, copious amounts of cloud-to-ground lightning, and strong winds up to 40 MPH are occurring with these storms. Locations in the path of these storms will need to take shelter until the storm has passed: Russellville, Red Bay, Phil Campbell, Belgreen, Vina, Hodges, Pogo, Cedar Creek Reservoir, Atwood, and Srygley Church.
Please use your head when dealing with these storms… Don’t drive into flooded roadways. Turn around, don’t drown. Also, if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to the parent thunderstorm to be struck by lightning. When thunder roars, go indoors.
